A Democratic candidate in Texas who won national attention when she went into labor while protesting the Trump administration’s family separation policy at the border won her election to a state House seat Tuesday night.

The 33-year-old Democrat, Erin Zwiener, defeated Republican Ken Strange. Zwiender, a children’s book author and first-time candidate, won 51 percent of the vote. She is the first Democrat to represent the district since 2010.

According to reports, Zwiener campaigned throughout her pregnancy, and continued even while at the hospital to give birth.

Zwiener met three potential voters at the hospital, and crafted a fundraising email after her epidural, according to Time correspondent Charlotte Alter.
