Romanian president criticizes Commission over its Poland stance
Klaus Iohannis says he trusts Poland’s democracy.
Romanian president Klaus Iohannis criticized the European Commission over its tough stance on Poland amid the rule of law row.
“I have complete trust in the capacity of the Polish democracy to find the best solutions, in line with the requirements of the rule of law,” Iohannis said in a speech Friday in Bucharest during a conference on Romania’s security leadership in southeastern Europe.
He also questioned the timing of the Commission’s opinion on Poland’s rule of law that was released on June 1, just weeks before Warsaw is due to host the NATO summit.
Poland has contributed to the consolidation of a real democracy since the collapse of communism in 1989, Iohannis said, adding: “We hope that the European institutions will support constructively these efforts by Poland, because the current difficult context, especially in the Eastern Neighborhood, but also inside of the European Union, require that all our efforts focus on ensuring our stability and security.”
