The tragic word today from several published reports is that professional runner Sally Meyerhoff, 27, of Maricopa, AZ, was cycling in her home state and failed to yield at a two-way intersection. She was hit by a pick-up truck and killed instantly. The accident occurred at 1:30 pm and the driver reportedly exhibited no signs of impairment.
With red hair and bigger than most female runners, Meyerhoff was easily identifiable and was well liked throughout the running community. In high school she was a seven-time state champion at 1600m/3200m and placed 12th at the 2001 Foot Locker National High School XC Championships. She went on to run at Duke University and graduated as an All American in 2006, declaring herself a “Blue Devil forever.”
In 2009, Meyerhoff won the US 25K title and in a cold, driving downpour in 2010 at the More Magazine Half Marathon in NYC she set the course record of 1:14:40.
This past Dec. she won the XTERRA Trai Running World Championship Half Marathon in Hawaii and this January won the women’s division of the P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon in a PR 2:35:49. She was scheduled to run the New York City Half Marathon on March 20.
