LOS ANGELES, CA — Tens of thousands of people awoke in the San Fernando Valley early Friday morning to the nightmare of flames bearing down on their communities. More than 100,000 were forced to flee, crowding into evacuation centers to await news of their homes and neighbors.

In mere hours, the Saddleridge Fire exploded to 7,500 acres, shutting down major freeways, destroying dozens of homes and closing schools. One man died trying to save his house with a garden hose.
