La Crosse, Wis. – University of Wisconsin-La Crosse senior wrestler Eric Twohey of Stewartville, Minn. (H.S.) has been named to the 2014-15 Capital One Academic All-America® Men’s At-Large First Team, as voted by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). It marks the second straight year Twohey has earned Capital One Academic All-America® honors after being a second team selection in 2013-14.
One of 15 selections to this year’s Capital One Academic All-America® Team, Twohey is the second wrestler in UW-L history to earn a pair of Academic All-America® honors. He joins Dan Laurent, who was named to the 2009 and 2010 first team.
It marks the seventh time in the last nine seasons a UW-L wrestler has earned Capital One Academic All-America® accolades.
The Academic All-America® Men’s At-Large Team includes National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III student-athletes in the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming & diving, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling.
An exercise and sport science/pre-medicine major with a chemistry minor, Twohey was named to the 2014-15 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III Scholar Award Team. It marked the third straight year he earned the honor. Twohey was also selected the 2014-15 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Max Sparger Wrestling Scholar-Athlete Award recipient.
Named the 2015 WIAC Wrestler of the Year by the league coaches, Twohey earned his second career NCAA Division III All-America honors with a third-place finish at 197-pounds at the national championships March 13-14. He went 4-1 at this year’s NCAA III meet. Twohey placed eighth at 184-pounds at the 2014 NCAA III Championships to earn All-America accolades.
Selected the 2015 WIAC John Peterson Wrestler of the Meet after capturing the 197-pound division at the league championships, Twohey finished 31-2 overall this year. He earned his third straight All-WIAC First Team honor.
Twohey won the 197-pound title at the 2015 NCAA Division III Midwest Regional to automatically qualify for the national championships. He also captured the 197-pound crown at the 2014-15 Augsburg College (Minn.) Auggie-Adidas Open.
He finished 95-26 in his four-year career.
A two-year team captain, Twohey is a three-time selection to the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll. He has been recognized on the UW-L Dean’s List numerous times and collected academic scholarships from his institution. Twohey is a member of UW-L’s Pre-Medicine Club and has volunteered at Gunderson Lutheran’s Renal Dialysis Center, as well as their Emergency Services Department. In addition, Twohey has volunteered at an adult day center, elementary schools and wrestling camps.
To be eligible for the Academic All-America® program, nominees must: be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials; have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30 (on a 4.0 scale) in both undergrad and graduate work; have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at the institution and completed at least one calendar year at the institution; have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s games and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
