Over the past few weeks, we have seen the tension between Anthem and the Hardys heat up more and more. Both sides are claiming ownership of Matt Hardy’s wildly successful “Broken” gimmick from last year, and neither side is willing to give the other an inch. It looks like it may even be leading to a legal battle over the gimmick. Furthermore, Impact Wrestling President Ed Nordholm recently appeared on Live Audio Wrestling and made the claim that there hasn’t been any interest from WWE about acquiring the gimmick from the company. This would contrast early rumors that WWE was attempting to purchase the gimmick from the company. There does appear to be some truth to Nordholm’s claim in a certain sense.
Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that WWE would actually love to get their hands on the “Broken Universe”, and would use it now if they could. However, it appears that WWE is going to stay away from the drama between the Hardys and Anthem, as the company does not want to set a precedent of buying gimmicks from other promotions for certain roster members. Impact Wrestling once threatened to have a Ring of Honor show cancelled if the Hardys appeared as their “Broken” characters, and now the Hardys have hired an attorney to help speak with Impact’s key figures. Talks about some sort of resolution will hopefully arise, but it is entirely possible that this could be headed to court.
If this does lead to a lawsuit over the “Broken” gimmick, WWE is going to stay far away from it and let it all play out on its own. Meltzer also noted that WWE would definitely use the gimmick if Matt were to acquire sometime soon. If Matt Hardy wants his “Broken Brilliance” to continue, it looks like he may have to find a way to do it alone. No lawsuit has been filed between either of the two sides as of yet, but hopefully we should have the result of the talks between the Hardy’s and Anthem’s people soon. The Hardy Boyz are contiuning to wrestle as themselves for the time being, and they will defend the Raw Tag Team Championships against Cesaro & Sheamus in a steel cage match at the upcoming Extreme Rules pay-per-view.
