EU member states have agreed to let the European Commission negotiate gas supply agreements with Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan.

The decision, taken by unanimity at a meeting of ministers for EU affairs, is the first time that the Commission has been authorised to negotiate on behalf of member states.

The move is a boost to the Nabucco pipeline project, which will transport gas from the Caspian to western Europe. The project depends on supplies from Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan.

In a statement, Reinhard Mitschek, the managing director of Nabucco Gas Pipeline International, welcomed the decision, saying: “This groundbreaking initiative taken by the European Commission matches the aim of the Nabucco project to enable the transportation of a broad diversified gas portfolio.”
