Hurricane Dorian, weakened from the powerful Category 5 storm that devastated The Bahamas, left the U.S. and barreled towards Canada on Saturday, spreading tropical storm conditions to Nova Scotia. Dorian brought tropical storm conditions to southeastern Massachusetts on Saturday and was expected to bring the same conditions to Maine, the last area in the U.S. expected to feel an impact.

Dorian’s center was near the southern coast of Nova Scotia Saturday evening. The storm was a hurricane-force post-tropical cyclone as it made its approach towards Canada.

Dorian’s center was forecast to cross the Nova Scotia coast near Halifax Saturday before moving into the Gulf of St. Lawrence near Prince Edward Island Saturday night, the National Hurricane Center said in its 5 p.m. advisory. Hurricane conditions in Nova Scotia were expected later Saturday. Dorian will then pass near or over northern Newfoundland and eastern Labrador, according to the NHC.

As Dorian moved towards Canada, it had wind speeds of up to 100 miles per hour with higher wind gusts. By Sunday morning, forecasters expected the storm to drop to below hurricane strength.

Meanwhile, residents of North Carolina’s Outer Banks island of Ocracoke, which was hit hard by Dorian on Friday and appeared to suffer the worst damage in the U.S., began returning home. An estimated 800 residents who remained on the island during the storm became completely isolated on the barrier island Friday as Hurricane Dorian made a near direct hit with torrential wind and rain. Storm surge rose 7 feet in two hours, trapping residents in their home, the Washington Post reported. By mid-afternoon Friday the first helicopter reached the island as authorities asked residents to shelter at the highest point in their homes until they could be rescued.

County officials said that the island’s water system had failed due to a faulty generator. A repair technician was onboard a morning ferry and officials said they were hopeful the system could be repaired on Saturday.

“As water service is restored, please check under you houses for any broken water lines and shut of the valve if a leak is discovered,” officials said. A boil water advisory will be in effect once water service is turned back on.

The Ocracoke Observer, a local community paper on the island, reported that there were no deaths caused by Dorian. According to the paper’s report, more than 90 percent of those on the island received some kind of damage.

Dorian slammed the Bahamas at the start of the week with 185 mph (295 kph) winds, killing at least 43 people and obliterating countless homes. From there, it swept past Florida and Georgia, then sideswiped the Carolinas on Thursday, spinning off tornadoes that peeled away roofs and flipped recreational vehicles.
