EU, Kosovo police break organized crime ring
Manhunt underway for lawmaker from the governing party, suspected of being group’s leader.
The European Union’s police mission in Kosovo and local law enforcement conducted a major operation against an Albanian-Serb organized crime ring on Wednesday, according to media reports.
Six people were arrested and authorities launched a manhunt for a lawmaker from the governing party, Azem Syla, who is suspected of being the gang’s ringleader, according to local media.
Prosecutors say that since 2006 the gang has managed properties all over Kosovo, worth €30 million.
Syla’s former driver was arrested in the raid, led by the European Union Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo, or EULEX, with the assistance of the Kosovo police, the Association Press said.
Just hours after police deployed 350 officers in 42 locations across Kosovo in search of 40 suspects, Kosovar Prime Minister Isa Mustafa met with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and Federica Mogherini, the EU’s foreign policy chief, in Brussels.
Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008. It signed a Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) with the EU in October, although its prospects of EU membership are remote.
