“And then I saw that Jennifer Lopez did this movie and she was 28 years old,” she said of the woman she calls “so beautiful” and “my idol.” “And I was like, okay I have a few more years. Not knowing at the time that she had like worked forever to get there, but I felt like a sense of relief like okay, I have a little bit of time. I want to figure out what I love to do.”
What she figured out is that she loves reality shows—MTV’s The Real World in particular—and wanted to submit an audition tape. “It clicked, like this is what I want to do,” she told BoF. Keeping Up with the Kardashians was born and the rest, as they say, is history.
The show catapulted Kim to a level of fame that few celebrities have experienced, and she was honest about the downsides of being internationally recognizable.
“I think that you have to be a strong person to just handle all the negative comments and the negative energy that comes your way, because if you put yourself out there, the nature of the Internet, everyone’s going to want to hate. So that to me is that trolling energy that everyone puts out there and just that negative energy is really hard to deal with,” she said.
After her harrowing robbery in Paris, the reality star changed her social media strategy and will teach her kids North, Saint, and Chicago to practice caution when it comes to the Internet. “I mean obviously I think people get envious and in my instance, and now what I would teach my children about safety and to not be flashy and to live their lives a little bit differently as far as just really being out there.”

As for how her own strategy has changed, Kardashian now works on a delayed schedule, meaning whenever you see her post from a public place, she’s likely already left. “I don’t really post in real time anymore. I might film something and then I’ll be so cautious to say, ‘Can you wait and post that in an hour when we’re gone from here.’ I just don’t like people knowing my every move physically,” she added.
When you’re a Kardashian, privacy is hard to come by.
