Mothercare said total worldwide network sales were up 10 per cent to £1.1bn in the year ended 27th March.

Total UK sales were up 2 per cent and UK like-for-like sales were up 3 per cent. Direct in Home sales rose 16.3 per cent. International retail sales were up 20.2%, up 2.2% like-for-like. In the fourth quarter, total group sales were up 3.3%, UK sales down 0.9% (down 1.6% lfl) and Direct in Home sales were up 15.3%.

Ben Gordon, Chief Executive said: “In the UK, like-for-like sales for the full year were up 3.0%. In the fourth quarter the extreme weather conditions adversely impacted performance, resulting in an extension of our winter sale, although the impact was offset by tight cost control. Our UK property strategy is progressing well, with 29 smaller in-town stores closed and 10 larger out-of-town Parenting Centres opened in the year. The wholesale partnership with Boots announced in February remains on track to launch in the Autumn. We continue to manage the business tightly in an uncertain consumer environment and are well placed as we enter the new financial year.”
