Jean-Pierre Vandersteen has been appointed interim director-general of the European Commission’s communication department. The appointment of Vandersteen, currently resources director in the same department, is with retroactive effect from 1 July until the appointment of a permanent director-general. The Belgian had headed the department since the departure of Claus Sørensen, who was appointed director-general of the Commission’s humanitarian aid department (ECHO) in July.
Lieve Fransen has been appointed director responsible for Europe 2020 social policies in the Commission’s employment, social affairs and inclusion department. Fransen is currently director responsible for representations in the Commission’s communication department.
Wim Nauwelaerts has been appointed a managing partner at Hunton & Williams, a law firm in Brussels. He will co-ordinate strategic planning and client services as well as the firm’s privacy and data-protection practice. He previously worked in the Brussels office of the law firm Hogan Lovells.
Pauline Gessant has been elected president of the Young European Federalists (JEF-Europe) for a two-year term. Gessant, who previously served as vice-president, replaces Philippe Adriaenssens.
