British decorative arts and design museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum is presenting New York’s most successful fashion labels set up between 1999-2004.
The exhibition New York Fashion Now explores the story of twenty designers from the Big Apple over a period of five years. Looking at the turbulent circumstances of those years and especially the economic situation after Nine Eleven, shows how budding designers coped setting up their own label.
The V&A zooms in on the innovative style of designers like Three As Four, Thom Browne, Proenza Schouler and John Varvatos. The young fashion talent revitalised the fashion industry in New York and contributed to its diversity of today. Supported by fashion retailers, manufactures and media, but also funded by design competitions.

Many of the up-and-coming designers couldn’t have survived without the support of the fashion industry. To perform every season is a great economic and creative burden for emerging designers. Particularly, as most of the fashion label were founded following the end of 2001. The economic downturn affected not only the designers, but also their staff, factories and retailers. Even though the time wasn’t ideal to start a fashion business, the number of designer-led fashion companies is incredibly high around that periode of time.
New York Fashion Now showcases this particular moment in the fashion industry and is on display in room 40 of the V&A until September 23rd.
