1958 NAIA National Champion wrestler for Mankato State; founded the Henry Sibley HS wrestling program.
Age 85 of West St Paul. Proud Father, Husband, Brother, Grandfather, Uncle, Teacher, and Coach went to heaven surrounded by family on July 26, 2018.
Born in Northfield, MN, son of a farming family, he was blessed with many athletic abilities and awarded a scholarship to play football at the U of MN (M Club Member), finishing his college career at Mankato State. While earning his degree, he was recognized for his highly accomplished performances in wrestling (All-American), track and football. He also served in the National Guard, transitioning to a career as a teacher and coach at Henry Sibley High School where he founded the wrestling program. He returned to the U of MN to complete his Master’s degree and after 30+ years teaching, had a 17-year career at the American Red Cross.
He was dedicated to his students and athletes; he led by example and hard work. He took great pride in their successes while encouraging learning in times of failure. He also enjoyed his community and neighbors, always willing to help others. Proud of his Czech heritage, devoted to his faith, he took his role as a provider very seriously. Family was always #1.
Survived by his wife Sophie of 60 years, daughters, Renee Kubes and Kristin (Chris) Johnson, granddaughters Nicole and Danika, brother Ron (Kay) Kubes, sister MaryJane Karow, brother in law, Joseph (Bev) Stepka, 40+ nieces and nephews and many friends.
Preceded in death by his parents Charles and Rose, son Bruce, sisters Cecelia, Millie and Rosemary, brothers, Stan, Ray, Joe, Ed, and Chuck.
