Tonight’s episode of SmackDown Live opens up with a new introductory video.
We are live from The Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado as Tom Phillips welcomes us to tonight’s show. He is joined by Corey Graves and Byron Saxton.
We go right to the ring and it’s time for another must see episode of MizTV as The Miz’s theme music is playing. However, The Miz is nowhere to be seen. Instead, R-Truth and Carmella are in the ring, and they appear to be hosting MizTV. Truth runs through The Miz’s intro but informs us that this is actually TruthTV and he requests a What’s Up from the crowd. Truth then introduces Carmella as The Andy Richards to his Conan The Barbarian before introducing his guest, Daniel Bryan. Daniel Bryan then makes his way down to the ring. Truth then says that he wanted Bryan as his first guest because he’s got a lot of questions, and Bryan asks for his best question. Truth swaps his sunglasses out for brainy specs and consults his index cards momentarily before settling on a question.
Bryan gives him permission to call him “D”, and Truth mentions how last week Bryan foiled The Miz and the other Carmella, and he wants to know how cathartic a win in Australia would be. Bryan puts the question and the show over, saying that it is already way better than MizTV, but before he can answer, Carmella interrupts and says that it’s time. For what? For The TruthTV Seven Second Dance Break.
Bryan is delighted by the dance break and Truth says that he’s got an animal segment coming up but first he wants to hear more about Super Show-Down, and Bryan asks if Truth knows what catharsis means. Truth says of course he does, but he wants Bryan to explain it so everybody else understands. Truth defines catharsis and says that just coming back wasn’t enough, he wants to be WWE Champion. Bryan then says that before he only defended the title one time, so he’s got unfinished business with the title, and also with The Miz because of his cheating at SummerSlam. So yes, if he wins in Australia, it will be cathartic. Daniel then says that he wants to be WWE Champion to prove that he’s the best, and he knows that The Miz will do anything to be WWE Champion just so he can say that he’s the best, and that’s the difference between the two.
The Miz interrupts and makes his way out to the stage area. He asks Truth what he thinks he’s doing, and Truth says that two weeks ago he beat The Miz, so if he had a championship, it would be his. Instead, he’s got a talk show, so he just took that. The A-Lister calls him an idiot, and Truth agrees, saying that he’s an idiot with a talk show. The Miz does the hand goes up, mouth goes shut gimmick and says that they have their differences but he knows why the people love him, it’s because he’s Daniel Bryan, the underdog who never stops fighting and always fights fair, and that’s why people love him.
But that’s also why he will never beat The Miz, he may not be the scrappiest, but he’s smart, he’s not a coward, and he wins at all costs, doing whatever it takes, and that’s why he won at SummerSlam and why he won at Hell in a Cell, and why he’ll win at Super Show-Down. The Miz then says that he is out here celebrating having foiled one of his 300 ideas, but he’s got thousands more to come, and he’ll do anything to move on to The WWE Championship. Will Daniel? Nah, he’s too proud to do what it takes to win and that’s why he consistently lets the people that care for him down. The Miz then says that the only way he can win is by compromising his own moral code, but that’s impossible, because if he cheats, he doesn’t just steal hope from the people, he tarnishes the name Daniel Bryan forever. Truth is apoplectic because all the extra talking has killed the animal segment and he bans The Miz from TruthTV for life.
The A-Lister freaks out on him, saying that this isn’t even his show, to which Truth says alright, you want your show back, they will have to fight for it, right now. But instead Truth calls for another dance break. The Miz walks off while they’re dancing and we cut backstage where he’s getting into Paige’s face. The Miz asks if she sees what’s going on and asks how she could replace his show with crap, and he wants it canceled right now. Paige says that he heard what Truth said, and if he wants his show back he has to go win it back. She shoos him off and he reluctantly heads back out to ringside.
Commentary hypes up Rusev demanding answers and a contract signing between AJ Styles and Samoa Joe and we go to a commercial break.
Back from the commercial break and the match between The Miz and R-Truth is underway.
The Miz vs. R-Truth: Daniel Bryan is on commentary for this one. The Miz applies a side headlock early on, but Truth fights away and The Miz gets frustrated. The Miz rolls outside for a breather and he taunts Daniel Bryan. The Miz gets back in the ring briefly before the fight spills out to ringside. They run around the ring until Truth catches The Miz with a right hand and then throws him into the fan barricade. R-Truth takes The Miz back in the ring and pummels on him in the corner. The Miz fights back and throws down Truth, then hits the Yes Kicks on him. R-Truth dodges a kick and rolls up The Miz for a two count. The Miz comes back with a DDT for a two count of his own. Truth and The Miz have a test of strength as they get to their feet, until Truth hits him with a right hand. Truth runs the ropes and The Miz fires back with a boot to the face, then he follows up with some running knees to the face. R-Truth dodges some shots from The Miz and then drops him with a spinning heel kick. R-Truth hits a splash in the corner, and then a vertical suplex into a jawbreaker for a two count. R-Truth follows up with a running forearm shot to the face for a two count. The Miz gets tangled up in the ropes and the referee pulls back R-Truth, and The Miz hits a thumb to the eye of R-Truth behind the referee’s back. The Miz immediately follows up with a Skull Crushing Finale, and then he taunts Daniel Bryan at ringside. The Miz follows up with the running knee to the face to Truth for the three count. Winner: The Miz
After the match, The Miz retreats to the floor as Bryan enters the ring to stare him down and check on Truth with Carmella. The Miz talks trash back at the ring as his music plays.
Commentary tosses to a video of Charlotte Flair’s photoshoot from earlier today where Becky Lynch blindsided her and attacked her, then threw her into road cases and demanded the photographer to keep taking pictures. Lynch then placed her boots to Flair and yelled about how people wants to see the champ’s face, and she takes pictures holding her title high with one foot on Charlotte. Commentary then informs us that Flair was evaluated for her injuries and sent home to recover.
The Bar make their entrance and we go to a commercial break.
Back from the commercial break and we are just in time for The New Day’s entrance.
The New Day cut a promo in the aisle and Xavier Woods says that they have always got jokes but honestly they play too much. Kofi Kingston agrees and says that the fact of the matter is at the end of the day, they do respect The Bar. In fact, in that very ring last week, Cesaro beat him fair and square, and it would be silly for them to come out here and not take them seriously, especially headed into WWE Super Show-Down.
Big E then says that since they have hell-a respect for The Bar, they’re going to play a game called The Say Something Nice Challenge. Starting with Cesaro, Woods says that regardless of them poking fun at his awkwardly-shaped areolas, and the fact that he looks like Swiss Jason Statham, they enjoy his movies. And despite Sheamus’ goofy mohawk, they decided the carpet must match the drapes.
Sheamus swipes the mic from them and runs them down about coming out here with the same stale jokes, but they’re not fooled. They wanna joke around, but all The Bar wants to do is fight, and Cesaro says that the mockery ends in Australia when they take the tag titles because they don’t just set The Bar, they are The Bar.
Big E vs. Sheamus: The opening bell sounds as the crowd chants “we wants pancakes.” Sheamus starts of strong with a series of strikes on Big E before the fight spills out to ringside. Big E turns things around on the floor and drops Sheamus. Big E lays Sheamus on the ring apron and hits a running splash on him. Back in the ring, Sheamus fights off Big E as Cesaro cheers him on. Sheamus drops Big E and then looks for the big boot, but Big E catches Sheamus with a powerbomb out of nowhere for a two count. Sheamus rolls out to the apron, and Big E looks for a spear but Sheamus blocks it with a knee to the face through the ropes. Back in the ring, Big E looks for the Big Ending, but Sheamus escapes and hits the brogue kick for the three count. Winner: Sheamus
After the match, Cesaro hits the ring to stand with Sheamus as Woods and Kofi pull Big E to safety. We go to replays.
We go backstage with SmackDown Live General Manager Paige, who’s talking to someone and urging them not to destroy everything, since the monitors are very expensive. We pan to reveal that it’s WWE Champion AJ Styles, and he says that he will be out there to sign on the dotted line, that’s it, and if he has to destroy anything, it will be Samoa Joe. He leaves and Paige reassures herself that it will be fine.
We then cut to Lana walking up to Rusev’s locker room and knocking. Rusev comes out and says that he just wants to know why Aiden English attacked. They start walking and we go to a commercial break on the promise that that is what’s next.
Back from the commercial break and Rusev & Lana make their entrance.
Rusev soaks in the chants a beat before saying that last week his friend, his partner, Aiden English betrayed him, and he did it on the greatest day of them all, Rusev Day, and that makes him a traitor. But before he crushes his skinny little soul, he wants an explanation, and he bids Aiden to come out and give him one.
English obliges and says that he knows Rusev is angry and he has every right to be, but none of this is his fault. Before he met Rusev, he was the super athlete, supremely talented, but none of these people cared about him. He was floundering, he lacked direction, but Aiden saw potential in him and joined his side, making him the most beloved superstar in WWE.
Don’t believe him? He’s got video footage cued up from last year of Rusev getting booed thoroughly when Rusev Day was first proclaimed, and the package goes through their history together from there. English then asks how amazing they were, saying that they had 70,000 people chanting for them all night at WrestleMania, and what happened? He’ll tell us, Lana happened.
English then says that this whole mess is Lana’s fault, and he’s got video to back this up as well. It’s so simple, he says, things were better when it was just the two of them and not the trio, and Lana speaks, saying that before English, she helped Rusev be an unstoppable force who rode a tank and crushed people, and she gives it up to English, he does a great job as a glorified cheerleader, but he’s just trying to use Rusev to make a name for himself.
English says fair enough and that nobody would question her dedication to her husband, standing by him and supporting him and being honest to him, but he has to wonder, with all her dedication, is she gonna tell him about that one night in Milwaukee? English drops the mic and walks off. A “holy s–t” chant starts up as Rusev and Lana look on confused.
On that bombshell, commentary cuts to a recap of the last Styles/Joe contract signing.
We go backstage with Naomi and Asuka, and The Empress of Tomorrow is training her striking as Naomi holds the pads and takes a beating to send us to a commercial break.
Back from the commercial break and Lana is talking to Rusev and saying that she has no idea what Aiden English is talking about.
Rusev says that he believes her when Becky Lynch rolls up and says that Milwaukee is a fun town, and after Lana objects she says that she runs this division and that makes Lana her business and she’s gonna need Rusev to carry her bags because she’s not gonna be able to walk out under her own power. Rusev wonders when the last time they were in Milwaukee was. Lana asks, “seriously?” and walks off.
The IIconics are in the ring but get cut off by Naomi’s entrance before they can start talking.
We get a backstage clip from earlier of Naomi and Asuka palling around when Sonya Deville and Mandy Rose roll up and mock them, which set up this match tonight.
We go to a commercial break before the match can begin.
Back from the commercial break and the match is underway.
Asuka & Naomi vs. Mandy Rose & Sonya Deville: The IIconics are on commentary for this one. The opening bell sounds and Mandy and Asuka start things off. Sonya quickly tags in, and Sonya and Mandy exchange frequent tags now to control the pace against Asuka. Mandy stomps on Asuka in the corner, and then Sonya tags back in for a double team kick on Asuka. Asuka blocks a kick and comes back with a German suplex on Sonya. Mandy and Naomi tag in, and Naomi hits a clothesline and then a hurricanrana. Naomi slaps Mandy across the face and then knees her. Naomi hits a leg drop for a two count. Sonya causes a distraction from the apron, which leads to Mandy dropping Naomi. Sonya tags in for the double team, and Asuka comes in to throw Mandy out. Asuka tags in and they hit a double team kick on Sonya for the three count. Winners: Asuka & Naomi
After the match, Asuka and Naomi celebrate as Asuka’s music hits.
We cut backstage to Shinsuke Nakamura walking to send us to a commercial break.
Back from the commercial break and we get a recap from earlier today of SmackDown Live Superstars meeting pediatric cancer patients at The Children’s Hospital Of Colorado.
Shinsuke Nakamura (c) vs. Tye Dillinger: This one is a non-Title match. Tye starts off strong with a series of chops to the chest of Nakamura, and then he drops him. Tye wastes some time taunting Nakamura, and Nakamura fires back with kicks and stomps. Nakamura looks for the Kinshasa, but Tye dodges it and superkicks Nakamura down. Tye follows up with a frog splash off the top for a two count. Tye mounts Nakamura in the corner and pummels on him, until Randy Orton comes out of nowhere and attacks Tye. Winner via DQ: Tye Dillinger
After the match, fans go wild as Orton grabs Tye and launches him into the ring post. Orton follows to the floor and unloads on Dillinger. Orton sends Dillinger into the steel ring steps and then tosses him over the announce table. Orton slams Tye back onto the announce desk now. Orton brings it back into the ring and stomps away. Orton slams Tye over the top rope and leaves him laying on the mat. Orton positions Dillinger on the apron and brings him to the floor with a big draping DDT. Orton mocks “Perfect 10” and walks up the ramp to the back. Nakamura grabs his title and goes to leave but changes his mind. Dillinger slowly gets up at ringside but Nakamura charges and drives his head into the ring LED board with a Kinshasa.
We cut backstage where Lana is in her gear and stretching. Rusev rolls up to wish her luck and she doubts he believes. He says of course he believes, he’s just trying to figure out why Milwaukee and he’s just a little frustrated, is all. She walks off and we go to a commercial break.
Back from the commercial break and Randy Orton is walking backstage when he runs into an interview. He scoffs at the idea that Tye Dillinger is his next victim, but he says that The Perfect Ten crap just pisses him off.
Becky Lynch (c) vs. Lana: This one is a non-Title match. Becky controls the opening moments of this one and slams Lana around. Lana comes back with a slap across the face and a spear. Lana pummels on Becky and then hits a running facebuster. The fight spills outside and Becky beats down Lana on the floor. Back in the ring, Lana comes back with a kick to the head for a two count. Lana climbs the turnbuckle, but Becky throws her down. Becky hits the t-bone suplex and then applies the Dis-Arm-Her for the the win via submission. Winner: Becky Lynch
After the match, Becky celebrates as her music hits and we get replays.
We head backstage where Aiden English is being interviewed about Milwaukee but he refuses to elaborate and says that next week he will show us the video evidence.
We head to another area backstage where SmackDown Live General Manager Paige briefs security on the contract signing as we go to a commercial break.
Back from the commercial break and SmackDown Live General Manager Paige is in the ring for the contract signing. Paige starts by saying that due to the controversial finish at SummerSlam, the match between Samoa Joe and WWE Champion AJ Styles at Super Show-Down must be No DQ and No Count Out, there must be a winner. She then says that they have taken precautions for tonight but we all know how these contract signings end. Paige then introduces WWE Champion AJ Styles first and he makes his way down to the ring. Samoa Joe is introduced next but his music doesn’t play. Paige then introduces him again but still there’s no Joe.
Styles says that Joe doesn’t have the guts to come out here, look him in the eye and sign on the dotted line. Styles then says that Joe is more likely to come attack him from behind because that’s how he works. AJ hypes the match at Super Show-Down and says that it’s right up Joe’s alley because he doesn’t play by the rules. Joe suddenly appears on the big screen, apparently streaming from his phone. Joe says that the best part about this job is traveling the world and seeing various places. Joe then says that he is happy to be at one of those places tonight. Joe shows us a mailbox he’s standing next to and it says Styles. AJ realizes that Joe is at his family’s home, pointing this out to Paige. Joe taunts AJ and brings up his family being there, thousands of miles from Denver. Joe wonders if AJ realizes that he is helpless right now and how he feels about this. AJ tells Joe to just hold on. Joe wants AJ to get out his phone and call Wendy to tell her, but Joe remembers that AJ doesn’t bring his phone to the ring. Joe has a gift for AJ’s daughter Annie, a baby doll. AJ begs Joe not to go in his house.
Joe goes on taunting AJ and rubbing it in, saying that they both know AJ’s family is home. Joe then says that AJ will feel these same feelings at Super Show-Down. Joe goes on talking to AJ and says that this has always been about consequences, mentioning how AJ stole the title from him. AJ begs Joe not to go in his home. Joe rings the door bell and looks at the camera to say, “Daddy’s home.” SmackDown goes off the air.
