A Texas county Republican Party has taken down a Facebook post that appeared to insinuate that “leftism” caused the Holocaust.

The post, which was originally posted by the Harris County Republican Party on Holocaust Remembrance Day, marked the occasion by saying “leftism kills.”

“In memory of the 6 million Jews lost to Nazi hatred in the name of National Socialism,” the post said, according to a screenshot posted online. “We will never forget.”

The Houston Chronicle reported on Monday that the post initially removed the “leftism kills” phrase before being deleted altogether over the weekend.

Vlad Davidiuk, communications director at the Harris County GOP, told the newspaper that the post was deleted because the party, which is based in Houston, did not “want a statement from us to be a distraction.”

“However, that withstanding, history recognizes that the Jews were killed by the Nazis and the Nazis were officially the National Socialist Workers Party,” he said.

The Nazis under Adolf Hitler were largely considered a right-wing fascist regime.
