MIDDAY BRIEF, IN BRIEF

Today at Commission, laptop ban and state aid

Commission believes no decision will be taken on proposed US flight ban on electronics.

The Commission’s daily press briefing started late because Margrethe Vestager, the competition commissioner, had been at the podium announcing new measures to ease state aid rules for ports and smaller airports.

When it did get going, the main news at the midday briefing was a meeting between Commission officials, EU countries and their U.S. counterparts on a potential ban on laptops being taken on transatlantic flights.

Alexander Winterstein, the Commission’s deputy chief spokesman, could not provide many details about the meeting which will take place this afternoon. But the Commission believes “no decision will be taken today, rather an exchange of information.”

The Commission also announced its monthly package of infringement measures against EU members deemed to be not complying with EU law. You can check them out here and here.
