Victoria’s Secret model Sara Sampaio has spoken out against an article
fashion website Jezebel published last week about her, in response to
a video the lingerie label posted on Instagram.

The Jezebel article, entitled ‘Helpful Victoria’s Secret Reminder:
Even Models Hate Themselves’ took Sampaio short film in which she
compares her frame to fellow model Candice Swanepoel body structure
and criticize the model for comparing herself to another lingerie
model.

“The video is packaged as though it’s supposed to encourage women to
accept and love themselves, but it’s really just one model talking
about how another model is so totally sexy in an unobtainable way,”
reads the Jezebel article, written by Erin Gloria Ryan.

However earlier this week Sampaio published her own personal response
to the article on her Facebook page, stressing that the short film was
created to encourage women to embrace their diverse body types and
calls on women to ‘stand together’.

“Dear Erin from Jezebel, I don’t hate myself! I was actually taught by
my family to respect and love myself and indeed others! I feel sorry
that you were not able to see beyond your own self-serving interest to
sensationalize a story, by creating a negative spin on a positive
message and making a foregone conclusion about a young ‘model’ you
have never met before,” wrote Sampaio.

“I have a lot of young girls that look up to me as a young woman and
role model. I have been criticized for being too skinny and judged
purely on my looks. I have been vocal because I believe that as women
we are all beautiful and no matter what we look like we deserve to
respect ourselves and be respected and loved by others.”

“The title of your article states that I hate myself, on the contrary
I love myself as I am. I can also look at another woman and admire her
beauty. In fact, I admire the beauty of many women from all areas of
life, not only Candice’s. It doesn’t mean I want to look like them
because I am happy the way I am, the way my mother and father brought
me into this world, and who I am today and who I will be in the
future.”

“You are a beautiful young woman, please love yourself and don’t judge
other women that you don’t know. As women we need to stand together.
We are judged and objectified often enough by men. Here is to your
feminism,” concludes Sampaio, referencing the end of Jezebel’s article
which states: “We did it guys. We won feminism.”

The response comes not long after Victoria’s Secret was recently under
fire for its latest bra campaign, which was originally named the
‘Perfect’ Body and caused thousands of people to sign a Change.org
petition asking the label to “apologise and take responsibility for
the unhealthy and damaging message that their Perfect ‘Body’ campaign”
sent out. Earlier this month, the lingerie brand silently renamed its
campaign “A Body for Every Body.”
