We’ve all heard the rumors regarding next year’s main event for Wrestlemania in New Orleans, Louisiana in 2018. The Wrestling Observer reported earlier this year that Roman Reigns would be challenging Brock Lesnar for his Universal Championship in the final match of the show next year. The idea would be that Roman would slay the unstoppable beast, and receive his big coronation as champion, as well as be firmly cemented to be “the guy” in WWE. This was the original plan for Wrestlemania 31 before they decided to have Seth Rollins cash in his Money in the Bank contract instead, and it sounds like plans have changed once again.
Despite the match being planned for several months, even going as far back as before this year’s Wrestlemania show, it looks like the main event match has been moved up by several months, and will now be taking place at this year’s SummerSlam. As of just a few weeks ago, Brock Lesnar was going to be facing Braun Strowman at the big event in August, but the company decided to go in a different direction. Roman Reigns announced on Raw recently that he will be facing whoever wins the upcoming Samoa Joe/Brock Lesnar match at Great Balls of Fire at SummerSlam. WWE has not mentioned anything about Reigns’ contendership being on the line in his ambulance match with Strowman, and it is now not expected to be added on.
According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer, Braun Strowman is not going to be challenging for the title at the moment. WWE has decided to push the Reigns/Lesnar match ahead by eight whole months, likely due to their belief that Lesnar’s part-time reign as champion has damaged their ratings. This does not mean that the match still can’t happen at Wrestlemania next year, but it seems unlikely that they would do it again, especially if Reigns is victorious in August. Great Balls of Fire will determine who Reigns will face at SummerSlam, and it does seem likely that Lesnar will retain the title over his challenger, Samoa Joe. If he does, then get ready to see “The Beast” vs. “The Big Dog” at SummerSlam later this year.
