Amid all the hubbub of the Barney’s liquidation, another fashion brand has announced its closing: Zac Posen. According to WWD, the employees were informed Friday afternoon and the company is immediately ceasing operations. The e-commerce site has already been shuttered.
“The board made a difficult decision,” Posen told WWD. “We were in a sale process and we ran out of time.”
Posen started his eponymous line in 2001, when he was 21. Quickly, he was crowned a fashion wunderkind — the darling of the early aughts who made sweeping, Old Hollywood–inspired ball gowns. But in 2010, he left New York Fashion Week to go to Paris, where “they understand my clothes.”
But the brand continued, and Posen eventually came back to New York. His designs are a staple on the red carpet; the light-up Cinderella gown Claire Danes wore to the 2016 Met Gala will surely be remembered as a high point. As far as more traditional red carpet dresses go, nobody makes them like Zac. He also frequently collaborated with brands that made his designs more accessible, including Target, Delta Airlines, and David’s Bridal. And he was a judge on Project Runway for six years.
In 2017, a documentary, House of Z, covered Posen’s rise, fall, and rise in the industry, portraying him as resilient figure focused on his brand. Posen told the Cut around the time of the documentary’s release, “Fashion is a pay-to-play game; this is an industry.” We’ll update this story as more information about the closure becomes available.
